The Fischerinsel is located in the southern area of Lake Tollensee south of Neubrandenburg opposite the village of Wustrow , a good 50 meters from the west bank. Unlike the village of Wustrow and the entire west bank of the lake, the fishing island and the lake area itself are part of the urban area of Neubrandenburg.

It is an island 150 meters long and 40 meters wide , which is now covered with trees. Approximately in the middle of the island on the eastern edge is an old, ruinous fisherman's house from 1729. Fishermen from the area stayed here until the 1970s, doing their work on the Tollensesee and the nearby Lieps .

Investigations have been taking place on the island for a long time, as it was assumed that the legendary main Slavic sanctuary of the Liutizenbund Rethra was here . A bridge discovered in 1886 when creating a canal led from the mainland near Wustrow to the island. In 1969, a joint excavation led by Eike Gringmuth-Dallmer (Academy of Sciences, Berlin) and Adolf Hollnagel (Museum for Prehistory and Early History, Schwerin) found two wooden figures from the 12th to 13th centuries. One of the statues was two-headed and represented a male Slavic deity . In addition, many wooden remains of a castle ( castrum Wustrow ), which was also mentioned in a document and which existed until the 13th century, were found. Further excavations in the shore area of the fishing island yielded valuable, mainly Slavic finds such as keys, knives, axes, lance tips, temple rings, silver coins, etc.

Volker Schmidt suspects that there was a fortified market place on the island. In 1977, the hobby archaeologist Hartmut Boeck discovered a rectangular reed hole of 40 by 14 meters on the Ruhrbarg in front of the island to the northeast . He concluded that there must have been a building here once. Earlier drilling by Gustav Oesten around 1905 produced pieces of charcoal and ceramic shards at this point. Buildings that were in front of a settlement or a castle on an island to the northeast always indicate cult buildings among the Slavs.

Whether it is the long sought-after Rethra, however, has not been proven or refuted to this day.
