Fish griffin ( Darłowo )
Old town seal of the back Pomeranian town Leba with the town coat of arms and the inscription CIVITATIS LEBEMUNDE, which shows the fish griffin and with which the accession to the Prussian Confederation was certified in 1440 .

The fish griffin is a heraldic animal and as such a special form of gripping . It has the upper body of a griffin and a fish body from the middle of the body down. In some coats of arms the fish tail is partially covered.

The area of origin of the fish grasping was the eastern part of Pomerania , the country Schlawe in the area around Stolp and Bütow . The Swenzones ruled here from the middle of the 13th century under changing suzerainty. The noble family, whose symbol was the fish griffin, died out around 1316. The area fell back to Pomerania. The griffin dukes adopted the fish griffin in their coats of arms. The eastern parts of the country were already represented by the coat of arms of the "Duchy of Kassuben". In order not to have to do without the fish griffin, a “rule of Usedom” was postulated for him, but this did not exist as such and did not appear in the title of duke.

The fish griffin is featured in the coat of arms of the noble von Puttkamer family , which is one of the reasons why they are related to the Swenzonen.

The towns of Zanow (Polish Sianów ), Stolp ( Słupsk ), Schlawe ( Sławno ) and Rügenwalde ( Darłowo ) also have the fish griffin in their coat of arms. The coat of arms of the city of Leba ( Łeba ), which was awarded by the Teutonic Order in 1360 , probably also shows a fish griffin; However, the heraldic animal is definitely not to be assigned, in the 19th century it was also depicted as a mermaid .
