Ovifat ( German  Fischvenn ) is a district of the municipality Weismes ( French (officially) Waimes ) in East Belgium , Province of Liège , with a predominantly French-speaking population, but with language facilities for the minority of the German-speaking population. Weismes and the municipality of Malmedy form the electoral canton of Malmedy .

In the early Middle Ages, Ovifat, along with Mont, Xhoffraix and Longfaye, was one of the up-and-coming communities on the southern slope of the Venn plateau , which were settled from Malmedy on the right bank of the Warche . These communities had enough areas in the hinterland of the Fens for grazing and haying. The places were on the streets between Hokai and Via Mansuerisca .

Chapelle de Cheneux
Ski slope in Ovifat

The center of Ovifat today is the Church of St. Remaklus, consecrated in 1935. Mentioned for the first time, and built in its current form in 1898, is the Cheneux chapel, which is on the road to Reinhardstein Castle . In 1354 construction began on the castle, which was destroyed by Napoleon's revolutionary troops. Reconstruction began in 1969 60 m above the Warche valley, and Reinhardstein has been a listed building since 1977.

Many residents work in the surrounding towns, but also commute to Luxembourg and Germany. The dairy industry has shrunk to one farm with a correspondingly large herd. The Scottish highland cattle are striking . They are outdoors all year round and graze above the parking lot at Reinhardstein Castle. The last sawmill in Ovifat specializes in building wooden houses in the low-energy sector.

With the castle, the lake of Robertville , a facility for alpine skiing - now also with summer use by karting - as well as many hiking and cycling trails, the place is strongly touristy. The nature park center of Botrange and Belgium's highest point, the “ Signal de Botrange ” observation tower, can be reached via hiking trails .

Typical for Ovifat and other places on the High Fens are the stone houses and the high beech hedges as wind protection. The nickname for the residents is barras (ram).

Winter sports

Alpine skiing has been used in Ovifat since the early 1930s. There are three downhill slopes and three drag lifts available for skiing and snowboarding. The winter sports area is at an altitude of between 530 and 600 m.
