Fitzroy

Fitzroy is a district of the Australian metropolis Melbourne . It is located approx. 2 km northeast of the city center and is the smallest district with an area of 1.4 km². Fitzroy is an important cultural center of Melbourne; shops, art galleries, restaurants and pubs are lined up along Brunswick Street .

The district was named after Charles Augustus FitzRoy , governor of the then British colony of New South Wales from 1846 to 1855 .

history

Fitzroy was the first district and was founded in 1839, four years after Melbourne was founded, under the name Newtown . In the following decades, Fitzroy developed into a place of residence for workers who were employed in factories in the surrounding districts. From the late 1930s, many working-class families moved to new neighborhoods on the outskirts of Melbourne. In the 1980s and 1990s, many of the remaining industrial and warehouse buildings were replaced by residential buildings.
