Five Finger Islands Lighthouse is a lighthouse ( English Lighthouse ) in Alaska . It stands on the southernmost of the Five Finger Islands, five rocky islands between Stephens Passage and Frederick Sound .
history
The Klondike gold rush made the Inside Passage a major sea route to and from Alaska in the 1890s . By rocky coasts, a strong tidal current , frequent rain and fog that had Navigation particularly challenging in the passage. By 1898, more than 300 ship accidents had been counted, and for this reason there were calls for shipping signs. In a report to the United States Congress , the head of the Thirteenth Lighthouse District gave two stations the highest priority: Sentinel Island and Five Finger Islands. The congress then approved the construction of these lighthouses. Both beacons went into operation on March 1, 1902. In the next three years, seven more lighthouses were built in the Inside Passage.
The 1902 built lighthouse was made of wood with a house for the lighthouse keeper . In the steel lantern one was Fresnel lens fourth order installed. In December 1933 the structure was completely destroyed by fire. Only the boathouse and a workshop shed have been preserved.
The new tower on Five Finger Islands was built in 1935 in Art Deco style made of concrete and the beacon was put back into operation on December 16, 1935. As the last lighthouse in Alaska, it was manned until August 14, 1984. In 1997 responsibility was transferred to the Juneau Lighthouse Association and the old optics were replaced by a VRB-25 .
On May 12, 2004, the lighthouse and old outbuildings were recognized as the Five Finger Light Station as a Historic District and added to the National Register of Historic Places .
