Nature reserve |
The Flachsee is the approximately 1.4 km long southern part of the reservoir on the Reuss in the canton of Aargau . With its 72 hectares, it is the second largest lake in the canton of Aargau.
location
The lake lies at an altitude of 378 m above sea level. M. in the Reuss level, approx. 4 km south of Bremgarten . It stretches from the Reuss bridge in Rottenschwil to the hamlet of Geisshof (municipality of Unterlunkhofen), is up to 300 meters wide with extensive marshland . There are five small islands in the middle of the lake. The Reuss once meandered through this area in many curves. The backwaters in the Rottenschwiler Moos southwest of the Flachsee still indicate the former river meanders. A flood protection dam runs along the west bank . There is a wide belt of reeds on the east bank .
Origin and use
The construction of the new hydropower plant near the Emauskapelle in Zufikon resulted in the dam of the Reuss in 1975, creating an approximately five-kilometer-long reservoir, which, due to its ecological characteristics, is a flat lake in the south and a river in the north. Human intervention enabled the creation of a large breeding area for around 50 bird species (e.g. the little ringed plover ) and at the same time a biotope for plants that have become rare (e.g. the great sweet grass on the red list ), which is under nature protection. Over the years, over 240 bird species have been registered at Flachsee, including z. B. gray herons , cormorants or gray geese released into the wild . A beaver family has also resettled.
The region is widely known as a local recreation area. At the hamlet of Geisshof you could take a ferry across the river in the summer months until 2015. At the southern end of the lake, between Rottenschwil and Unterlunkhofen , a steel arch bridge (built in the late 19th century) spans the lake - now a listed building. Passing through the nature reserve with the rubber boat is possible subject to certain restrictions.
