Mannhausen shallow water zone

The Mannhausen shallow water zone is located in the municipality of Calvörde in the Börde district in Saxony-Anhalt , Germany . It is part of the “ Ohre-Drömling ” nature reserve .
Geographical location
The shallow water zone is around two kilometers as the crow flies from Mannhausen , on the Mittelland Canal , near the colonies of Mannhausen and Piplockenburg . It is also parallel to and north of Kreisstraße 1651 on the very edge of the Drömling Nature Park .
History and use
In 2002 and 2003 the shallow water zone was created as a compensatory and replacement measure for the expansion of the Mittelland Canal. The area, which is now 70 hectares (40 hectares of which is water), belongs to the Ohre-Drömling nature reserve and the Drömling nature park and is assigned to the level II protection zone (wet zone). There are several smaller islands and peninsulas within the shallow water zone. The shallow water zone is connected to the Mittelland Canal by an open inflow and is a standing body of water . This body of water offers home, protection and resting place for many species of birds such as geese , cranes , waxwings and the sea eagle . The nature park administration offers several appointments for specialist observations of the various bird species that live around and on the shallow water zone.
