The official flag of Nordland

The official flag of Nordland ( Norwegian : Nordlands flagg ) was introduced in 1963 and is a square coat of arms banner with the coat of arms of the Norwegian province ( Fylkeskommune ) Nordland .

The flag with the ratio 1: 1 depicts a Nordland boat. These boats are an umbrella term for traditional boat types that were built for fishing in the northern Norwegian provinces of Nordland, Troms and Finnmark until the end of the 19th century. The black color symbolizes the tar that was used on the boats. Yellow stands for the sun.

history

Old flag

The old flag from 1883, at that time still for the Nordlands Amt, showed on a white background with a red border at three outer corners, in the upper middle a fish under a hook and an oar with a fishing net above. The inscription was Nordland's office above and May 15, 1833 below the net .

New flag

The flag contains the coat of arms of Nordland

The first chairman of Fylke Nordland, Haakon O. Wilka (1899–1991), who was also chairman of the Norwegian island community Vega , initially wanted a Nordland boat as a motif for the coat of arms of his community, but later decided that the Nordland boat would be better for the coat of arms for the Nordland province would fit. In 1963 the provincial committee (fylkeutvalget) asked the Nordic Fylkemann Bue Fjermeros (1912-2000) to initiate the work for a Fylke coat of arms for Nordland, whereupon the heraldist, artist and chief archivist at Oslo Riksarkivet ("Reichsarchiv"), Hallvard Trætteberg (1898–1987), commissioned the design of a coat of arms, a flag and a seal. The provincial committee dealt with the proposals on August 7, 1963 and opted for the black boat on a gold background.

According to the rules for the design of coats of arms for the municipalities in Norway, coats of arms and their banners can consist of a motif, a color and a metal (yellow or gold or white or silver). The rules accepted by the Reichsarchiv were formulated by Hallvard Trætteberg himself. He is also the author of fifteen other municipal and provincial coats of arms.

The provincial parliament ( Fylkesting ) decided on December 5, 1963 that the provincial coat of arms (fylkesvåpnet) with the following description ( blazon ): to introduce:

“A black Nordland boat with a mast and square sail on a golden background .” (På gull bunn en svart nordlandsbåt med mast og råseil.)

With the resolution of the Crown Prince Regent of January 15, 1965, the coat of arms, the flag and the seal were approved. Before the approval process was completed, the name Nordlandboot was replaced by the Reichsarchiv with boat , as they believe that a Nordlandboot requires a more detailed drawing than the heraldic rules, and these rules do not allow any information on locally specific boat types. In addition, gold has been replaced by yellow in the flag . This changed the description of the flag to:

"A black boat with a mast and square sail on a yellow background." (På gul bunn en svart båt med mast og råseil.)

When the Fylkekommune was founded in 1975 as a separate administrative body elected by the people, the coat of arms banner was adopted after the provincial parliament election.

In 1990 the Reichsarchiv stipulated that the coat of arms can also be depicted with yellow as well as with a thin contour line around the coat of arms shield and that when printing, the Pantone Matching System 116 should be used for the yellow hue.

Since 2008, the coat of arms has been included in the logo and graphic profile of Fylkeskommune Nordland.

The original drawings of the design for the coat of arms, the flag and the seal are kept by the Reich Archives.

Flag rules

Flag days and rules are based on those for all of Norway, although the flag times in the provinces of Nordland, Troms and Finnmark are shorter in the winter months (November to February 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) than in the south.
