The flag of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands was adopted by Decree 2007-18 and can be used as a symbol of the territories alongside the flag of France .
Description and meaning
The flag shows the French tricolor in the left upper corner on a blue base . On the flight part is a combination of the letters TAAF , the first letters of the French name of the area (Terres australes et antarctiques françaises). This combination is complemented by five stars, which symbolize the five districts of the area: the Kerguelen archipelago , the Crozet Islands , the Adélieland , the Îles Éparses as well as Saint-Paul and Amsterdam .
history
Until the current flag was adopted on February 23, 2007, the flag of the chief administrator of the areas, which until then only had three stars, was used unofficially as a symbol for the areas. They stood for the island groups of the Kerguelen, the Crozet Islands as well as Amsterdam and Saint Paul. The flag, like the arms of the TAAF, was introduced in 1955 by the first chief administrator, M. Richert .
Other flags of the areas
In order to compete with flags of convenience, France allows ships to be registered on the Kerguelen, which gives them special advantages over the ships of the mother country. These ships continue to fly the French sea flag.
