Manitoba flag

The flag of Manitoba is a variation of the Canadian Red Ensign , the former national flag of Canada . It shows the British Union flag in the jack and the coat of arms of Manitoba (George's cross and buffalo) in the flight section.

In 1869/70 the Métis rebels under Louis Riel were the first to use their own flag for the Manitoba area. A combination of fleur de lys and shamrock was depicted on it on a white background . After the Red River Rebellion was put down , the Union Flag served as the official provincial flag.

After the federal parliament had decided on a new national flag in 1964, the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba decided on May 11, 1965 to introduce the slightly modified Red Ensign as the provincial flag so that the old national flag would not be forgotten. Queen Elizabeth II gave her approval in October 1965 and on May 12, 1966 the new flag was hoisted for the first time.
