Flag of Yukon

The flag of Yukon is a green, white and blue tricolor with the territorial coat of arms in the middle white field above two narrow-leaved willowherb (Chamerion angustifolium), the official flower of the territory. The coat of arms includes a crest a sled dog , the breed of the Alaskan Malamute is a member. The coat of arms includes a George cross , which symbolizes England . Other symbols stand for the mountains and their natural resources and the Yukon River. The green symbolizes the Yukon forests, white the snow and blue the lakes and rivers. The division of the fields is similar to that of the national flag, but does not correspond exactly to the pattern of the "Canadian stake ": The middle field is one and a half times as wide as the outer fields instead of twice. The aspect ratio is 2: 1.

Blue Ensign (1956-1967)

In 1956, the area (then known as the Yukon Territory) was given a coat of arms. This also included the right to use a flag, but little use was made of it. It was a Blue Ensign with the coat of arms in a white disk in the flight section.

In anticipation of the Canadian Confederation's centenary in 1967, a design competition was held for a new flag. The Whitehorse section of the veterans organization Royal Canadian Legion took over the patronage. One of the 137 entries selected was one by Lynn Lambert, a student at Yukon College. Lambert had submitted a total of ten proposals.

The Competition Commission sent a prototype flag to Ottawa to determine a suitable heraldic description. However, an expert changed the design so that the three fields are exactly the same width and sent back the corrected version. However, the commission insisted on the original version, which was officially introduced on December 1, 1967.
