The flag of Ontario was declared the official flag of the Province of Ontario on May 21, 1965 . The flag is a modified Red Ensign , with the Union Flag in the jack and the coat of arms of Ontario in the flight part .

Before 1965, the Canadian Red Ensign was blowing on government buildings and parliament. This year, after protracted debates, the federal government decided to replace the Red Ensign with the current Canadian national flag . This decision was particularly opposed by the rural population of Ontario, the electoral base of Prime Minister John Robarts ' Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario .

Robarts suggested that Ontario introduce its own flag. This should be a Red Ensign like the old national flag , with the coat of arms of Ontario instead of the Canadian national coat of arms . Robarts personally had no objection to the new national flag, but he regarded the Red Ensign as an important symbol of the British heritage of Ontario.

Both the Ontario Liberal Party and the Ontario New Democratic Party supported the proposal as they did not want another lengthy flag debate. The Ontario Legislative Assembly adopted the new flag on March 17, 1965 with only two votes against.
