Flag of Nunavut

The flag of Nunavut is the result of various designs in a competition. It was introduced on April 1, 1999, the day the new territory was established.

The flag is split yellow and white with a red Inuksuk in the middle. In the Inuit culture , the Inuksuk is an object that guides people or marks sacred and other special places.

The star in the upper part of the flight represents the Niqirtsuituq ( Pole Star ) and is traditionally a navigational aid and an unchangeable symbol for the guidance of the elders in the community. The five points of the star stand for the five Eskimo tribes: Inuit (Canada), Inuvialuit (Canada), Kalaallit (Greenland), Inupiaq (Alaska) and Jupikyt (Russia).

The colors blue and gold (or yellow) are the preferred colors to symbolize the wealth of the land, the sea and the sky; Red is a reference to Canada .
