Italy, in the spring of 1945. While the German troops are retreating to the Gothic position , soldier Heinz Prüller falls asleep while sitting on a tree and when he wakes up he is cut off from his comrades in a small Tuscan town. The long hours of solitude give him the opportunity to relive the events of his life that have left indelible marks. Among them are first and brutal war experiences, both as a viewer and as a protagonist.
While it becomes clear what turned him from a sensitive young man into a killer and rapist, normal life slowly begins around him; people are returning to their homes and to their work. Hans leaves his seat and leaves the small town, fascinated by the images of peace that surround him. From a distance he is shot by an unknown person.
criticism
Mymovies judges: A unique film, shot with almost no budget, almost no dialogue and no music - but an impressive soundtrack made of noises - which can at least rudimentarily be described as a moral poem of great tension that ignores conventional narrative methods.
Awards
In 1969 the film took part in the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d'Or.
Among the awards for the film is that of the foreign press at the Golden Globe Awards .
