Flavien Joseph Melki

Flavien Joseph Melki (born October 10, 1931 in Hassaké in Syria ) is a retired Archbishop of the Syrian-Antiochene Catholic Church united with Rome and Grand Chancellor of the Syrian Catholic Patriarchate in Beirut ( Lebanon ). At the same time he is auxiliary bishop of the patriarch .

Life

Flavien Joseph Melki was ordained a priest on October 17, 1954 .

On June 24, 1995, Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Antioch and titular bishop of Arethusa dei Siri . He was ordained bishop by the Patriarch of Antioch, Archbishop Ignatius Antoine II. Hayek , on December 30, 1995. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Damascus , Eustathe Joseph Mounayer , and the Archbishop of Homs and later Patriarch, Ignatius Moussa I Daoud . On May 25, 1996, John Paul II appointed him titular archbishop of Dara dei Siri . On October 10, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

Melki was not only auxiliary bishop and grand chancellor of the Patriarchate in Beirut , but also secretary of the Holy Synod and member of the executive committee of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops and Patriarchs in Lebanon ( Bishops' Conference of Lebanon). He is a member of the Council of Churches in the Middle East and a representative of the Syrian Antiochene Catholic Church. He is also represented in the emirate of Qatar and president of the St. Zacharie social organization.

Melki founded the Home of Hope orphanage, which he still runs. He is also the founder and president of the "Speranza" association, a retirement home for priests and devout Catholics.

Own views

In August 2012, Melki warned that Islam could conquer Europe - driven by polygamy and a large number of children - within 50 years.
