Flavio Apel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Flavio Apel (born September 7, 1988 in Rome , Italy ) is a German-Italian artist. He lives and works in Kassel and Marburg .

Life

Flavio Apel grew up in Tolfa , 50 kilometers from Rome , until he was six , before moving to Kassel with his family in 1994 . After graduating from the Friedrichsgymnasium (Kassel ), he studied French and Spanish as well as business romance and art at the University of Kassel . Apel has been studying visual arts and Romance cultures at the Philipps University of Marburg since 2017 .

Artistic work

Despite his penchant for technical perfectionism, Apel's picture compositions go beyond mere imitation of the outside world, also because complex picture compositions and their protagonists offer the viewer numerous approaches to interpretation. The lifeless actors in his works, such as bent forks and spoons or half-full soup plates, come to life in his figurative world, as do partially fragmented insects or lying on their backs. The stag beetle in particular is a recurring motif in Apel's works, which, in interaction with lifeless, everyday objects, shows the contrast between liveliness and thinginess. The high-contrast representations of Apel are also evident in the expansion of his still lifes, in which he increasingly places female figures opposite the stag beetle.

But in addition to the unusual encounters between his protagonists, their placement itself is a special feature in Apels' reduced direction. The empty center of the picture directs the viewer's gaze to the edges of the picture, where the fine shades of the protagonists appear.

Apel has been represented by Galerie Rasch from Kassel since 2014 and has since presented his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad. In addition, his drawings appear regularly in international publications. In 2018, the Marburger Kunstverein showed works by Apel for the first time in a group exhibition. In the same year the documenta Forum Kassel , which can be traced back to Arnold Bode , bought autographed prints from Apels. In 2019 he took part in NordArt 2019 with two of his works and is also a member of the Künstleronderbund in Deutschland eV Realismus der Gegenwart.
