Flavocetraria cucullata , also known as hooded lichen , is a shrub lichen . The specific epithet comes from the Latin word cuculla = hood.

description

The pale yellow hooded lichen that grows curly is colored violet at the base. The individual bearing tabs have a smooth surface and are rolled up at the edge. Apothecia are very rare. They are disc-shaped at the end of the lobes and are brown in color. Photobionts are algae from the genus Trebouxia . The ascospores are ellipsoid and unicellular. The hood braid contains u. a. Usnic acid .

The hooded lichen is easy to confuse with the snow lichen ( Flavocetraria nivalis ), whose bearing tabs are not rolled up at the edge and have an angular, wrinkled surface.

Occurrence

The lichen is circumpolar in the tundra of Russia, Scandinavia and North America as well as in the mountains of the lower altitudes such as the Himalayas, the Alps, the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians. In the southern hemisphere, occurrences in Peru and Bolivia have so far been proven. It is a typical representative of dwarf shrub heaths exposed to the wind , which also lack a protective snow cover in winter. While it is widespread in the Alps, the relict occurrences outside the Alps are very rare in Germany.

Others

In Alaska, the indigenous people used this lichen as a spice in fish soups. The species is under nature protection in Germany .
