The “Flora of Tropical East Africa” (FTEA, dt. “Flora of Tropical East Africa”) is a flora for the countries Kenya , Tanzania and Uganda . It is the most extensive large area flora in Africa; it was completed in 2012 after more than sixty years. About 1500 new plant species have been described by 135 botanists from 21 countries.

Initial preparations for the FTEA began in 1949, and the first volumes appeared in 1952. The model was the "Flora of West Tropical Africa" ​​started in 1927. The series was produced by the Kew Gardens in cooperation with local institutions such as the University of Dar es Salaam or the Kenyatta University Nairobi, but also numerous other organizations, including the University of Addis Ababa , the University of Bayreuth , the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh , the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan , Coimbra University , the New York Botanical Garden and the Smithsonian Institution .

The FTEA appears in fascicles , each covering one family ; only particularly large families are distributed over several fascicles. The individual volumes contain, among other things, complete descriptions, illustrations and identification keys as well as extensive nomenclature information; newer volumes also contain information on the hazard. In addition, a glossary and an introductory volume were published. 225 volumes are planned for the FTEA, which will list 12,500 plant species in an area of ​​1,766,000 km².
