Florence Lewis

Florence Parthenia Lewis (born September 24, 1877 in Fort Scott , Bourbon County , Kansas , † after 1938) was an American mathematician , astronomer and university teacher .

life and work

Lewis graduated from the University of Texas and received his bachelor's degree in 1897 . In 1906 she received her Masters degree from Radcliffe College , Cambridge , Massachusetts . In 1913 she received her doctorate with the dissertation "A Geometrical Application of the Theory of the Binary Quintic" with Frank Morley at Johns Hopkins University in astronomy and mathematics. From 1908 to 1938 she was a professor at Goucher College and was known for her studies on the geometric interpretation of algebraic invariants.

Awards

She was a member of the American Astronomical Society and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific . As a longtime member, she was an adviser to the American Mathematical Society from 1919 to 1922.
