from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gustave Florentin Garraux (born October 2, 1859 in Herzogenbuchsee , † June 7, 1950 in Langenthal ) was a Swiss painter , illustrator and draftsman .

Life

Garraux attended primary school in Solothurn and then did a commercial apprenticeship in a large Basel company. He then traveled to Switzerland as a traveling salesman . After his marriage in 1889, he ran an Epicerie-Mercerie shop on rue Centrale in Moutier for 38 years . In parallel to this activity, he created an extensive collection of postcards with which he achieved great success. It was first exhibited in the Kunstmuseum Bern in 1909 . In the mid-1910s, Garraux took lessons from Philippe Ritter, professor of drawing at the “Musée d'art industriel de Berne”. In 1927 he gave up his business and moved to Bern and later to Langenthal, where he mainly devoted himself to his art. His mostly postcard-sized pictures with humorous content depict people in historical costumes. He liked to illustrate his private correspondence with small watercolors. Original postcards are occasionally offered for sale on the Internet. He spent his old age at the Lindenhof in Langenthal and died there at the age of 90.
