Florestine of Monaco

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Princess Florestine Gabrielle Antoinette of Monaco (born October 2, 1833 in Fontenay-aux-Roses , France , † April 24, 1897 in Stuttgart ) was a member of the Grimaldi family . By marriage she became Duchess of Urach and Countess of Württemberg.

Life

Florestine was the only daughter of Prince Florestan I of Monaco (1785-1856) and his wife, the former actress, Maria Caroline Gibert de Lametz (1793-1879), daughter of Charles Thomas Gibert de Lametz. Her paternal grandparents were Prince Honoré IV of Monaco and his wife Princess Louise d'Aumont Mazarin .

On February 16, 1863, Princess Florestine married Count Wilhelm von Württemberg (1810–1869), son of Duke Wilhelm von Württemberg , brother of King Friedrich von Württemberg , and his wife Freiin Wilhelmine Rhodis von Tundersfeld in Monaco . On May 28, 1867, Wilhelm was elevated to Duke of Urach. The marriage had two sons:

⚭ 1892 Duchess Amalie Maria in Bavaria (1865–1912), eldest daughter of Duke Carl Theodor in Bavaria
⚭ 1924 Princess Wiltrud Marie Alix in Bavaria (1884–1975), sixth daughter of the last King of Bavaria, Ludwig III.

After the death of Prince Albert I of Monaco in 1922, her firstborn son Wilhelm Karl registered his claims to the throne of the principality. He justified his claim to the throne with the fact that his mother had not waived her right of inheritance when she married. But France insisted that Monegasque law excludes female succession (not in principle). Princess Charlotte , illegitimate daughter of Prince Louis II , renounced in 1944 in favor of her only son Rainier III. to all rights to the Monegasque throne.
