Florian Demange

Florian-Jean-Baptiste Démange ( Korean 안 세화 플로리 아노; born April 25, 1875 in Saulxures , France ; † February 9, 1938 in Taegu , Korea ) was a French Roman Catholic priest , member of the Paris Mission and Vicar Apostolic in Korea .

Life

Démange was born to Florian Jean Baptiste and Mélanie Viktoria Florence. In 1887 he entered the Le Kyung-hyang Shin-Munt seminary. In July 1893 he entered the Issy seminary . On June 7, 1895, he received the tonsure . On June 26, 1898, Démange was ordained a priest for the Paris Mission . He then traveled from Paris as a missionary to Korea on August 3, 1898, and arrived there on October 8, 1898. He then learned the Korean language and worked as a priest in Pusan from 1899 . In 1900, he was appointed professor at Yong-san Seminary because of health problems. In 1906 he became editor of the newly founded Catholic newspaper Le Kyung-hyang Shin-Mun.

Pope Pius X separated the Vicariate Apostolic of Korea into an Apostolic Vicariate of Seoul and an Apostolic Vicariate of Taegu . The Pope appointed Démange on April 8, 1911 Vicar Apostolic of Taiku and Titular Bishop of Adrasus . On June 11, 1911 inaugurated Gustave-Charles-Marie Mutel , the former Vicar Apostolic of Korea and now of Seoul, it was assisted by Pierre-Marie-François Lalouyer , Apostolic Vicar of Nordmanschurei , and Marie-Félix Choulet , Apostolic Vicar of Südmanschurei , in Seoul to the bishop. He consecrated Jean-Marie-Michel Blois , Vicar Apostolic of Southern Manchuria, as bishop. He assisted in six episcopal ordinations.

In 1913 he founded a seminary in Taegu and in 1915 a monastery of the nuns of St. Paul of Cartres . In 1920 he traveled to Europe for the ad limina visit and visited America on the return voyage. In 1925 he traveled to Rome for the beatification of the martyrs of Korea. In 1928 he fell ill again and then had to take it easy. In 1931 he wrote a catechism for Korea. On the occasion of his silver jubilee bishop he was appointed papal assistant to the throne . He died on February 9, 1938 and was buried three days later in Korea.
