Florian Schmidt (* 1975 in Cologne ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) and district councilor in Berlin-Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg . As a local politician, he became known beyond the borders of Berlin through his controversial positions and activities, in particular with regard to the district rental and traffic situation.

Life

Schmidt completed his community service in 1996/97 in the refugee accommodation of the Protestant social service at Frankfurt Airport . He then studied until 2008 Sociology (major), art history and economics (minors) at the Universities of Hamburg , Barcelona and the Humboldt University of Berlin with the conclusion Magister (MA) with a thesis on sociology of space . From 1995 to 1997 he studied classical guitar at the Dr. Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main and took flamenco and tango guitar lessons from 1998 to 2002 at the Hamburg Conservatory and with private teachers in Barcelona . From 2004 to 2008 he worked as a freelance musician alongside his studies.

In 2007, while still a student, Schmidt began to coordinate the area of sustainable urban development (Urban Development Working Group) at the Berlin Educational Center of the Heinrich Böll Foundation (until 2013). Between 2008 and 2010 he also worked as press spokesman for the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin initiative . From 2009 onwards, Schmidt also headed the project office Kreativquartier Südliche Friedrichstadt, which he co-founded in the same year (until 2016). This project office initiated the first conceptual process of the Berlin property policy and has been accompanying it to this day with the project space Bauhütte Südliche Friedrichstadt.

In autumn 2015 Schmidt was one of the co-founders of the Haus der Statistics initiative , of which he was a spokesperson until 2016. In addition, Schmidt was a studio representative for Berlin and head of the studio office in the BBK- Kulturwerk from 2014 to 2016 . In this function, in cooperation with the Raumlabor Berlin, he launched the new studio building initiative Art City Lab in spring 2016, according to which affordable work space is to be developed in the new building together with artist groups.

Schmidt is co-owner of “Urbanitas - Berlin Barcelona. Office for Local Development, Cultural Production and Communication ”. He lives with his wife in Prenzlauer Berg and has two children.

politics

In 2006 Schmidt joined the Greens . In 2007 he was the initiator and subsequently head of the Working Group Creative City Berlin of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in the Berlin House of Representatives . From 2007 to 2009 he was a member of the Federal Working Group Planning, Building, Housing of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen, from 2011 to 2016 coordinator and spokesman for the initiative Stadt Neusehen and from 2012 to 2016 coordinator of the round table in the Berlin House of Representatives for the realignment of Berlin property policy . In 2016 he became district councilor for Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg in Berlin and head of the department for construction, planning and facility management .

Schmidt would like to bring as many apartments in the district back into possession of the municipality. His role models include the Spanish anti-eviction movement and neighborhood networks, which are “very strongly promoted” in Barcelona. Schmidt's declared goal is to keep private investors purely for profit out of the Berlin housing market and to have new construction carried out by companies that focus on the common good. Another goal is to increase the proportion of the housing stock oriented towards the common good in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg to 50 percent.

To protect tenants from displacement, Schmidt repeatedly exercised the right of first refusal in favor of a cooperative "Die eG" founded especially for this purpose and planned funding from the State of Berlin, which had not yet been approved. This was sharply criticized by the SPD, CDU, FDP and AfD in the Berlin House of Representatives. Schmidt was also accused of having manipulated files on a failed real estate deal with the Die eG cooperative. He denied allegations that he had withheld papers for political reasons. However, he admitted formal errors and apologized. The district supervisory authority of the Senate Interior Administration announced investigations against Schmidt in January 2020.
