Florian Ungler (* unknown; † 1536 in Krakow ) was a printer and publisher of the first books in Polish .

When and where Ungler was born is not known, but we do know that he came to Krakow from Bavaria around 1510 and founded his first printer's workshop there. He printed and edited numerous high quality books, including a.

  • 1512 the Introductio in Ptolomei Cosmographiam , with maps and information about America ,
  • 1513 the well-known prayer book of Biernat of Lublin , Raj duszny ( Paradise of the Soul ) and
  • 1514 Orthographia seu modus recte scribendi et legendi polonicum idioma quam ultissimus , the first grammar book of the Polish language.
  • 1532 Aemilius Macer [sic!]: De herbarum virtutibus cum veris figuris herbarum [...]. Edited and provided with glossaries by Simon de Lowitz [= Syreniusz Symon, Szymon from Lowicz], Cracow (Officina Ungleriana); Reprint Warsaw 1979.

Although he had an excellent command of his craft and his products were of the highest typographical quality, he could barely make a living from printing and even had to give up his workshop temporarily and work with Johann Haller . By then, Ungler had published around 80 items. In 1521 he tried his luck again with his own, newly established printing workshop and published another 166 books until his death (1536). After his death, his wife Helena continued the workshop until 1551.
