The Floriansbasilika (Polish: Bazylika św. Floriana ) in Kraków is a Catholic baroque basilica on Ulica Kurniki 2 next to Jan Matejko Square in the Kleparz district north of Kraków's old town, specifically the Florian Gate .

history

The church was built between 1185 and 1216 in Romanesque style in front of the city walls of Kraków's old town. It was consecrated by the Kraków Bishop Wincenty Kadłubek . In 1272 the church was mentioned as ecclesie ... beati Floriani ... in Cracouia . The town of Florencja (founded in 1366, later Kleparz) was named after the church. The Krakow Saints John of Krakow (from 1439) and John Paul II (1949–1951) as well as Martinus Vadovius (from 1617) worked at the Florianskirche . After the destruction during the Swedish Flood , the church was rebuilt in the baroque style between 1657 and 1684. At times, Queen Luisa Maria Gonzaga and Tadeusz Kościuszko were buried in the church . Stanisław Wyspiański married in 1901 in the Teofila Pytkówna Church. In 1999 the church was raised to the rank of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II , who visited the church on June 9, 1997.
