action

Makoto Katagiri is believed to have shot a man named Jimmy as a child and has since suffered from nightmares and erectile problems . He lives with his mother Miyo, a porn actress, and has an office job. When his boss, Senzō Tōyama, finds pictures of tied up women in Katagiri's desk , he instructs him to kidnap and discipline his wife Shizuko, who is dismissive to him and is seeking a divorce . Katagiri agrees. He raped Shizuko and tortured her along with his mother.

Over time, a love affair develops between Katagiri and Shizuko. They also help him overcome his trauma. When he tells his mother that he and Shizoku intend to marry, she pays a man who looks like Jimmy to rape Shizuko. This renews Katagiri's childhood trauma . In addition, Tōyama demands that he return Shizuko. Katagiri calls in sick and avoids contact with Tōyama. Eventually he decides to release Shizuko, but she returns to him.

Katagiri and Shizuko then go to the cinema to see a porn movie. The film reminds him of his childhood trauma. This time, however, he can finally overcome it, because he remembers that it was not he but his mother who shot Jimmy. He calls his mother from a phone booth to confront her while he has sex with Shizuko.

When Katagiri comes home with Shizuko, he is expected there by Tōyama, who demands that Shizuko come with him. She explains to Katagiri that she is still Tōyama's wife, but offers him to come with them. Against his mother's wishes, he agrees.

meaning

Naomi Tani first played a leading role in Hana to Hebi in a film produced by one of the major Japanese studios. Before that, she only appeared in low-budget productions in smaller studios. Nevertheless, by that time she was already well known. She was also mentioned in the US magazine Playboy in 1968.

Hana to Hebi was also the first BDSM film in the Roman Porno series. Nikkatsu had long been skeptical of the subject. After Hana to Hebi and the later Ikenie Fujin had great success, other similar films followed, including many with Naomi Tani.

Other films

In 1968 a film version of the novel was published by Yamabe Pro under the title Hana to Hebi yori: Niku no Shiiku ( 花 と 蛇 よ り 肉 の 飼育 ). The main role also played in this film adaptation Naomi Tani.

From 1985 to 1987, Nikkatsu attempted to link three other BDSM films with similar plot by using Hana to Hebi in the title. These films were also marketed internationally as sequels. Actors or other contributors from Hana to Hebi are not involved.

A remake (Flower and Snake) by Takashi Ishii was released in 2004 with Aya Sugimoto in the lead role. A sequel to this film was produced in 2005, again with Aya Sugimoto ( Hana to hebi 2: Pari / Shizuko ).
