Floyd Bean

Floyd Bean (born August 30, 1904 in Ladora , Iowa , † March 14, 1974 in Cedar Rapids , Iowa) was an American jazz pianist , arranger and composer .

Bean played drums in the Grinnell High School band, but then switched to piano. He made his first appearances in 1919 at the Linwood Inn on the Mississippi; In 1923 he played with Bix Beiderbecke , then in various local bands and for the radio station WOC Radio in Davenport , before he became a member of Bob Crosby's orchestra in 1939 . In Chicago he worked in the following years with Muggsy Spanier , George Brunies , Darnell Howard and Bob Scobey , and he also arranged for Boyd Raeburn . Bean worked on several recordings of Jimmy McPartland ( Sugar / The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise ) between 1939 and 1950 . In 1944 he led his own formation.

His compositions include Back Room Blues (later called Lazy Piano Man and recorded by Muggsy Spanier) and I Never Thought I'd Sing the Blues ; the latter was covered by Stan Kenton . In his later years he still performed at various jazz festivals and local Cedar Rapids venues before he died in March 1974.
