The Isla de Margarita Airport ( Spanish : Aeropuerto Internacional del Caribe Santiago Mariño , IATA : PMV , ICAO : SVMG ) is a Venezuelan airport near the city of Porlamar on the island Margarita . The airport was nationalized in 2005, along with numerous other companies, under the direction of the then President Hugo Chávez . Launched by the nationalization affected consortium (including the Zurich Airport ) went there empty handed and complained in 2010 at the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes in Washington, DC In 2014 was awarded the consortium rights and restitution of 33.7 million US dollars awarded, the government of Venezuela lay vocation one.
The airport is named after the Venezuelan revolutionary leader and independence fighter General en Jefe Santiago Mariño, who was born in 1788 in the village of El Valle del Espíritu Santo near the town of Porlamar.
Incidents
- On August 14, 1974, a Vickers Viscount 749 of Linea Aeropostal Venezolana (LAV) ( aircraft registration YV-C-AMX ) was flown on approach to Porlamar airport in Cerro Piache hill 5 kilometers away. In this CFIT ( Controlled Flight into Terrain ), all 48 occupants, 4 crew members and 44 passengers, were killed.
