The airport was opened in 1958 and closed to commercial air traffic in 2001; it served the South African military as a base until civil use began in 2014.

The operating company is a merger of the airlines Airlink, Lion Sands and Federal Air and was awarded the contract to operate the airport in September 2013.

Associated with the tender was the obligation to renovate the airport. The modernization was carried out in the first half of 2014, on June 2, 2014 Airlink started operations from OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg .
