Skukuza is the main camp of the Kruger National Park in South Africa .

geography

Skukuza is located in the east of South Africa in the Mpumalanga province and about 70 kilometers from the border with Mozambique . The Sabie River flows nearby . The Skukuza Airport of the same name is located north of the camp .

history

The camp was called Sabie Bridge around 1900 , but was renamed Skukuza in 1936 from the word Sikhukhuza , which comes from the Shangaan language. The name means "new broom" and is intended as a nickname for James Stevenson-Hamilton , the first game park ranger of the Sabie Game Reserve , who freed the area from the adverse influences of poachers and outlaws. Today Skukuza offers overnight accommodation to more than 1000 visitors. The camp is the starting point for safaris and also has a 9-hole golf course .

fauna

The main attraction of Skukuza are all-terrain vehicle safaris into the area, during which a large number of different animal species can be observed in their natural habitats. This also includes the Big Five ( elephant , rhinoceros , buffalo , lion and leopard ).
