The Ventspils Airport is a regional airport and serves the port city of Ventspils in northwestern Latvia . Located five kilometers southwest of the city, the airport was opened in 1939, temporarily closed in 1983, but reopened in 2000.

history

The airport was intended as a stopover for the Riga - Liepāja - Ventspils line . However, with the outbreak of World War II and the invasion of the Red Army in 1940, these plans were not carried out. Instead, Soviet military planes were positioned at the airport.

In 1975 the asphalt runway was built and regular connections to Riga, Minsk and what was then Leningrad were inaugurated.

In 1983 the airport was closed.

In 2000 the reopening took place and in 2003 a new passenger terminal with about 300 square meters was inaugurated. Other services were gradually introduced, e.g. B. Fuel in 2004.

In April 2008 the airport was added to the network of the Latvian airline airBaltic . However, the flight was stopped again at the end of the summer season and has not resumed until today.

The airport is currently used for military and charter flights .
