deepest lake in Berlin |
The airport lake is located in the Berlin district of Tegel in the Reinickendorf district . It is located north of Tegel Airport , west of the A 111 and southeast of Lake Tegel . At up to 34.3 meters, it is the deepest lake in Berlin.
Emergence
The lake was created between 1953 and 1978 through the extraction of around two million tons of gravel . So it is an artificial lake, a quarry pond .
Access to the lake
The lake can be accessed from the eastern side, coming from Otisstrasse . Another path leads from Seidelstrasse along the property line of the Tegel JVA and then about 500 meters through the forest. There are several parking spaces at both entrances.
Recreational opportunities and use of the lake

There is a spacious beach on the north side. There is a cordoned off bird sanctuary on the south-west bank . However, this can be viewed from three vantage points. The lake is also used by divers and anglers . As the lake is surrounded by forest and there are paths, hiking, for example to the Tegeler See, is also possible there.
In autumn / winter 2006, extensive renaturation work was carried out in the bird sanctuary (located southwest of the lake) and in the area of the adjacent bank so that birds and other animals have better opportunities to live there again. Above all, excess vegetation was removed.
Inflows and outflows
The inflow of the lake takes place via the Schwarzer-Graben-Kanal, which is fed by the diverted surface water from part of the Reinickendorfer streets. Before the water flows into the airport lake, it passes an upstream sedimentation basin - also known as the “ Vorsee ”. However, the basin is completely overloaded when it rains heavily, so that it only filters out some of the suspended matter flowing in.
A second biological filter stage was planned in the 1980s. In 1986 the lake received an aeration system for additional water improvement.
In addition, the airport lake is fed by previously purified water from a drainage system at the airport. The lake has no outflow.
