The Aquino airport ( it .: Aeroporto di Aquino ) is located in the Italian region of Lazio , around 117 km southeast of Rome , near the small town of Aquino .
Infrastructure and use
The airfield, located around 1.5 kilometers east of Aquino between the A1 motorway in the south and the Rome – Cassino – Naples railway line in the north, has a 950 meter long grass runway (15/33). In the north of the airfield there are smaller handling facilities, hangars and asphalt or concrete aprons. A road leads around the elliptical airfield with connections to the surrounding municipal, regional and trunk roads. The Piedimonte-Villa Santa Lucia-Aquino train station can be reached on foot in around five minutes.
The airfield is primarily used for general aviation . It is operated by the company Human Flight Dimension , which also has a flight school here. Skydiving training is also important.
history
The airfield was opened in 1926 and converted into a military airfield in 1937 . Until the end of 1942, the Italian Air Force used it mainly for pilot training. In 1943 the airfield was mainly used by the German military, especially for transport flights to Tunisia and Sicily . The airfield was the target of Allied air raids in July and October 1943. Because of the Allied advance it was given up in October 1943.
After the war, the airfield remained under the control of the Italian Air Force, which handed it over to the civil aviation administration on February 20, 1971. Until 1995 the airfield was operated by the Aeroclub della Ciociaria , which hosted various air sports events there. In 1995 the aero club got into financial difficulties, which is why the airfield was closed. In 2005 the HFD company received an operating license from the aviation authority ENAC and restored the neglected airfield.
