The Buochs airfield ( ICAO code LSZC , mil: LSMU ) is a regional airfield and former Reduitflugplatz the Swiss Air Force in the community Buochs in the canton of Nidwalden in Switzerland . It has a hard-surfaced runway with a length of 2000 meters and a width of 40 meters, several taxiways and stands and hangar spaces.
business
The airfield is formally in the area of responsibility of the Swiss Air Force, but is operated civilly by Airport Buochs AG. Since January 1, 2004, the Buochs military airfield has only been a sleeping base for the Air Force. In the event of an extraordinary situation, the entire military infrastructure of the airfield can be made operational again. However, there are considerations that the military will withdraw entirely from the airfield.
use
The premises of the Pilatus Aircraft Works are located adjacent to the airfield . All test and delivery flights for the aircraft manufactured by Pilatus, such as the Pilatus P-3 , Pilatus PC-7 , Pilatus PC-8D , Pilatus PC-9 , Pilatus PC-12 , Pilatus PC- 21 and Pilatus PC-24 .
history
In 1940 the army created a runway for the Reduit airfield. The Mühlefluh artillery plant in Vitznau was responsible for the terrestrial defense of the airfield. Conversely, the artillery plant could be protected by the Flab dispositiv of the Buochs airfield ( rapier ).
In the last few years of operation, the aircraft Mirage III S, Mirage IIIRS, Mirage IIIBS, Mirage IIIDS and F-5E Tiger II were used as an army airfield in Buochs . Buochs airfield is equipped with an aircraft cavern , and the A2 motorway was built in such a way that Mirages IIIS could have been deployed from this motorway with the help of JATO start-up missiles, see the military significance of Swiss motorways . However, such starts were never carried out on the A2.
The airfield was actively used as a jet airfield by the Swiss Air Force until 2003. The Reconnaissance Squadron 10 was from 1968 until its dissolution in 2003 with the III Mirage stationed RS in Buochs. At times the Militia Squadron 8 with F-5E Tiger II was based in Buochs and most recently from 2000 to 2003 the Militia Squadron 19 with its F-5E.
With the end of Buochs as an active military airfield, the Mirage IIIRS were also decommissioned, so two Mirage IIIRS were given a special paint job in black and white. The Mirage IIIS, which were taken out of service in 1999, were parked in Buochs for several years until they were scrapped; Occasionally, Pilatus PC-6, PC-7, Alouette III , Super Puma, Mirage IIIDS were also operated, rarely was the use as an alternative to F / A-18 . The safety ropes for F / A-18 and F-5 at both ends of the runway can be lowered flush with the runway so that they are not an obstacle for small aircraft.
With the Revita exercise in spring 2014, the airfield was activated by the Meiringen airfield command for four days. Missions with F-5E and F / A-18 were flown from Buochs.
In March 2016, the renaturation of taxiways that were no longer needed began. A total of 60,000 to 70,000 square meters of space are to be demolished within 10 years at a cost of between 7 and 9 million francs.
Other uses
The airfield area is also used for different occasions, for example the 35th World Championship for military parachutists took place there in July 2010, and a big concert with Bonnie Tyler was held at the same time . In May 2012, the Nidwaldner trader organized the trade show "Iheimisch" and in September the same year, the fourth was Airshow Swiss Aero Expo organized.
On August 1, 2014, the PC-7 team showed an airshow at Buochs airfield, where the team officially flew the show with smoke generators for the first time. The reason for this was the Swiss National Day , the 25th anniversary of the PC-7 team and the rollout of the Pilatus PC-24 .
The Nidwalden model flying group (MGN) also uses the airfield.
