history

F-5E Tiger II of the Swiss Air Force with a season 19 emblem.

In 1938 the Fliegerkompanie 19 was founded; their first device was the Potez 25 . In 1939, Fliegerstaffel 19 received the Dewoitine D-27 aircraft from Fliegerkompagnie 21 and in 1940 they were retrained to Morane D-3800 . During the Second World War she was stationed in Meiringen, Dübendorf, Emmen, Thun, Kägiswil and Littau. In 1945 the name was changed to Fliegerstaffel 19. Since there was no compensation for loss of earnings when the war broke out, the extensive military service posed a financial problem for many members of the army. Therefore, the Fliegerkompanie 19 issued the first soldier's stamps from World War II.

In 1947 the training on the P-51 Mustang took place and the Alpnach military airfield was expanded as a military base and the home airport of the squadron. From 1957 to 1973 the flight operations took place with the De Havilland DH.112 Venom . On September 16, 1970, Flugwaffe fighter jets landed on the A1 motorway, a section of the Swiss national road network, for the first time. Five pilots from Fliegerstaffel 19 also use the specially prepared section of the N1 motorway near Oensingen. In 1973 he was retrained to the Hawker Hunter . In 1980 he was retrained to the F-5 Tiger, with Fliegerstaffel 19 becoming the first Tiger squadron. In 1994, Alpnach, the longstanding war base of Fliegerstaffel 19, was closed to jet operations and the unit was relocated to the Mollis military airfield . The last jet aircraft use with F-5E at Mollis airfield was carried out by Fliegerstaffel 19 in 1999. In 2000, Mollis became a helicopter airfield, and the 19th squadron moved to Buochs. In 2003 Buochs airfield became the "Sleeping Base", and the 19 squadron moved to Sion airport .

The Fliegerstaffel 19 is a spleen pilot squadron, which means that all pilots fulfill their military service in the squadron and otherwise work in a wide variety of professions that do not necessarily have to have a connection with aviation. The Fliegerstaffel 19 does not have its own aircraft, use the aircraft of the Tiger fleet like the other squadrons according to availability. However, as an F-5 / Militia pilot squadron , it has a relay machine that is provided with permanent relay painting on the rudder unit (analogous to the relay machines J-5011, J-5017 and J-5018 of the squadrons 11 , 17 and 18 ). Since the F-5E J-30 19 is not more in the inventory of the Swiss Air Force, was the J-30 38 (in relation to the founding year of Season 19 38 sometimes used) as a relay machine relay called "Swans". Today's tasks for Fliegerstaffel 19 are to practice aerial combat with up to four against four aircraft. This also includes use against fourth-generation combat aircraft (e.g. F / A-18 Hornet). The first priority, however, is the constant readiness for air police operations, which requires the mastery of identification and interception procedures for aircraft entering the airspace to be monitored.

The future of Fliegerstaffel 19 is, as with the other two F-5 militia squadrons, Fliegerstaffel 6 and Fliegerstaffel 8 , uncertain. This is because the F-5 is expected to be retired in 2018. It is planned to introduce a successor model for the F-5 and F / A-18 for service in the Swiss Air Force by 2025. It is not yet clear how many squadrons will then exist and in what form they will then be organized. With the procurement of modern, complex combat aircraft, it is foreseeable that they cannot be used effectively by militia pilots and that only professional military pilots will be used.
