Fliegerkompanie 14 was founded in World War II. In 1945 the name was changed to Fliegerstaffel 14. The Fliegerstaffel 14 used the De Havilland DH.100 Vampire from 1952 to 1970. In 1970 the Fliegerstaffel 14 was disbanded. It was reactivated in 1989 as Instrument Fliegerstaffel 14 and used the Pilatus PC-7 from the Locarno military airfield. The task is to train the prospective military pilots in instrument flight after the SPHAIR selection and the basic aviation training at the pilot school in Locarno. All prospective pilots in the Swiss Air Force go through this training. After completing instrument flight training with instrument pilot squadron 14, the paths of the pilot students separate. Helicopter pilots continue their training on the EC635 helicopter , the budding jet pilots learn the basics of air combat and air police service with the Pilatus PC-21 at the pilot's school at the Emmen military airfield .
