It was founded on January 1, 1927 as Fliegerkompanie 16 with Fokker D-Vll aircraft. From 1929 on, the aircraft types Dewoitine D-9 C-1, Dewoitine D-19 C-1, Dewoitine D-27 and Häfeli DH-5 were used. These aircraft were replaced by the Fokker CV in 1938, and C-35 aircraft were also added from 1940. In 1942 the training was carried out on the C-3603 and in 1945 the name was changed to Fliegerstaffel 16. In 1951 the training was converted to the P-51 Mustang , which was replaced in 1952 by the first De Havilland DH.100 Vampire jet aircraft. But in 1953 the switch to the De Havilland DH.112 Venom took place. The squadron took on reconnaissance tasks in 1961 with the De Havilland DH.112 MK 1 R Venom.

From 1968 to 1999 Fliegerstaffel 16 deployed the Dassault Mirage III S from the Buochs military airfield . In order to say goodbye to the Mirage IIIS, the J-2311 was painted gold. This machine was scrapped in Buochs before 2003.

From 2000 to 2002 the Fliegerstaffel 16 with F-5E Tiger was stationed at the Payerne military airfield . After the departure of the BAE Hawk jet trainer and before the Pilatus PC-21 was introduced to the Swiss Air Force, Fliegerstaffel 16 in Sion was responsible for further pilot training with the F-5F, even before the pilots were allowed to fly the F / A-18 . With the introduction of the PC-21 at the pilot school in Emmen, the Fliegerstaffel 16 was dissolved in 2007.
