The airport customs ( French Aéroport de Sion ) is a regional airport and former Reduitflugplatz the Swiss Air Force in Sion ( Switzerland ). The most important airline at the airport is the Swiss Air-Glaciers . In addition to Air Zermatt, she is also responsible for air rescue in the canton of Valais . Airport Sion in numbers

In 2014 Sion Airport counted 24,074 passengers and 35,287 flight movements. A fired hard-surfaced runway 2000 m long and a grass runway 660 m long are available in Sion for approach and departure. The airport can handle up to 2600 passengers per day.

Between 1996 and 2005 there was also regular service in Sion. In 2018 and 2019, Swiss Saisonal took on certain flights to Zurich and London Heathrow , which are operated by Helvetic Airways .

Air Show Sion 1986

Approx. one hundred thousand spectators should attend the air show from 14/15. June 1986. On this occasion, a Swissair Airbus A310 landed in Sion.

Military use

The Swiss Air Force used Sion as one of its four jet airports alongside Payerne , Meiringen and Emmen . It was the airfield command 14 Sion . In addition to the propeller aircraft Pilatus PC-6 , Pilatus PC-7 , Pilatus PC-9 , Pilatus PC-21 and helicopters, it was used by the F / A-18 and F-5 Tiger fighter jets . It was the home base of the militia pilot squadrons Fliegerstaffel 19 Swans with F-5E. Sitten is equipped with a cable catching system for the F / A-18's catch hook landings. The A9 motorway was built in such a way that it could be used as a take-off and landing runway for military aircraft if required. With the army's stationing concept, it was planned that the Air Force would withdraw from Sion after 2018 and Sion would only be operated as a purely civil airfield, but would remain usable as an alternative airfield for the fighter jets. The air force rehabilitated the runway again in late autumn 2016.
