The Locarno airfield ( Italian Aeroporto cantonale di Locarno ) is an airfield on the territory of the political municipality of Locarno in the Swiss canton of Ticino .

location

The airfield is located about 6 kilometers southeast of the center of Locarno and is therefore comparatively far removed from its namesake for its size. It is located in the Magadino plain near the Ticino River , which flows into Lake Maggiore just a little over a kilometer to the west . It is a few kilometers away from the A2 motorway and accessed via a cantonal road. Besides the river, it is mainly surrounded by meadows and a farm (due to the nature reserve Bolle di Magadino ). The places Cadenazzo , Magadino , Tenero and Gordola are in the immediate vicinity . In the airport complex itself, companies are like the helicopter charter company "Eliticino", a partner of Heliswiss , Europe's largest skydiving center "Para Centro", the flight school "Aero Locarno", the aircraft maintenance company "Aeromecchanica" and the Swiss Air Rescue ( Rega).

The airfield also includes the Locarno airfield command with the ICAO code LSMO, which uses the same runways but has its own taxiways and parking spaces as well as a large hangar.

The closest stop for the Swiss Federal Railways is the Riazzino station on the Giubiasco – Locarno line, around 2 km away .

history

The civil part of the airfield was opened in the summer of 1939. The military part followed in the following winter. Due to the good weather conditions, the military has also carried out basic flying training for military pilots there since 1941.

Flight operations

Most of the flight movements are carried out by smaller private planes. Many flight movements are also caused by training flights by the Swiss Air Force, the helicopter charter company "Eliticino" and the local glider club, the latter only using the two grass runways.
