The airfield Burnie ( English Burnie Airport ) is a of civilian airfield on the north coast of to Australia belonging island Tasmania . It is located about 10 miles northwest of Burnie and immediately south of the small town of Wynyard , which is why it is unofficially referred to as Wynyard Airport . It has been operated since 2001 by Burnie Airport Corporation , founded in the same year, 51% owned by the City of Burnie and 49% owned by the private company Australian Regional Airports .
The airfield, which was built in the late 1930s, offers both cargo traffic and scheduled passenger flights . The goals are, as of spring 2016:
- Melbourne with REX
- Melbourne-Essendon with Free Spirit Airlines
- King Island and Launceston with Sharp Airlines
- Hobart with Par Avion Airlines
Originally the airfield had a runway closer to the terminal with the identifier 08/26. After the construction of runway 09/27, which was largely parallel to the south, it was abandoned; it now serves as a taxiway .
A special feature was a railway line that crossed the 05/23 line in its northeastern part. The right of way was regulated with a traffic light . Operations on the railway line ceased in 2005.
