The International Peace Garden Airport (FAA LID: S28) is the northernmost airport in the US state of North Dakota .

The airfield is east of the International Peace Garden on the border between the United States and Canada . A handle aircraft of general aviation up to 15 passengers can be carried out by both the Canadian and the American Border Patrol, both maintain the regular border crossing on US Highway 281 / Manitoba Highway 10 .

The airfield covers 49 hectares and has a runway. Apart from a few parking positions, no facilities are available, pilots must also expect deer on the runway.

Role in World War II

In the first years of the Second World War the airfield played a special role. During the intensive German submarine activities in the North Atlantic, Roosevelt's Lend Lease Act of March 11, 1941 allowed the urgently needed relocation of the Lockheed Hudsons and Lockheed Venturas from the Californian factories to the Canadian border in order to serve as reinforcement of the Canadian coast defense. However, the pilots of the Air Transport Command Service could not fly into Canada, so they landed on the runways near the Canadian border. In a subsequent night and fog campaign, volunteer farmers from neighboring Manitoba, Canada, continued to help . They pulled the planes with horse-drawn carts across the border, where they were taken over the next morning by the Royal Canadian Air Force for coastal protection on the North Atlantic coast. The International Peace Garden Airfield thus became a transshipment point for aircraft that were to be used in the North Atlantic.
