The Aérodrome Marigny-le-Grand is a former NATO reserve military airfield in France , whose roots go back to the time of the Second World War . The former base is located in the Grand Est region in the Marne department on the territory of the municipalities of Marigny and Gaye , about twelve kilometers south-east of Sézanne .

In mid-June 1940, at the end of the German Wehrmacht's western campaign , the entire Jagdgeschwader 2 with its Bf 109E lay at Marigny for a few days.

The construction of the jetted NATO reserve base with three margarite-shaped parking bases for three combat aircraft squadrons took place after the beginning of the Cold War , essentially between 1952 and 1956, and minor extensions were made until the early 1960s. The main user was the 3rd Fighter Wing ( 3e Escadre de Chasse ), which was in Reims until 1961 and has since been stationed in Nancy-Ochey . The Escadron de chasse EC 1/8 and the 11e Escadre de Chasse from Toul also used the base. Even after France left the NATO military structure, the airfield was initially held.

Until the beginning of the 21st century, it was used by gliders for many years, the base was still maintained by the Ministry of Defense during this time. Economic re-use is not planned as the area is designated as an EU protected area for fauna and flora.
