Fokion Negris ( Greek Φωκίων Νέγρης , also Phokion Negris , born April 13, 1846 in Istanbul , † January 15, 1928 in Athens ) was a Greek scientist and politician.

biography

Negris came from a noble Phanariotic family. He lived in Paris as a child , where he studied at the École polytechnique and the mathematics faculty of the Sorbonne . In 1870 he moved to Greece . From 1875 to 1886 and from 1894 to 1899 he was the director of the Lavrio Mining Company, where he reorganized the mining activities, technical equipment and the Athens-Lavrio rail link, which was financed by the Greek Mining Company to meet its tax liability.

From 1895 to 1898 he was also mayor of Lavrio.

In 1898 Negris was first elected as a member of parliament and was re-elected several times until 1918. In 1898 and 1901 he was finance minister in the second and third governments of Alexandros Zaimis in the difficult epoch after the Greek bankruptcy in 1893 and the lost Turkish-Greek war of 1897 and the establishment of the international financial control . As finance minister, he concluded important loans with favorable terms for Greece for the expansion of the country's rail network.

Negris was in charge of introducing social security for miners

He was Minister of Transport in 1917 and Minister of the Interior in 1918.

Scientifically, Negris dealt with climate research and the geology of Greece. In 1926 he was appointed a member of the Academy of Athens and in 1927 elected its first chairman.

An elegant boulevard in the Athens district of Kypseli is named after Negris .
