Food court

A food court is an area within a building in which there are sales outlets for various independent restaurants and snack bars , but the seats are centrally arranged in shared seating groups. The roots of the food courts in the USA go back to the 1960s. There they became more and more important from the 1970s when they were installed in many shopping centers (malls) and airports .

In Germany, numerous shopping centers, outlet stores and the like have opened up in recent years as part of urban development . with food courts and have thus led to their widespread acceptance in Germany. The selection of participating restaurants and snack bars can vary greatly from one location to another, but restaurants from fast food chains and other system catering establishments are usually represented.

Examples of food courts in Germany

  • CentrO : The Coca-Cola oasis is one of the largest food courts in Europe with 1,200 seats
  • Skyline Plaza : The largest food court in Frankfurt with 16 food shops
  • Waterfront Bremen : The food court of the shopping center in the west of Bremen includes more than 20 catering providers, including "many of the trendy big chains", and offers around 500 seats.
  • Berlin Brandenburg Airport : Around 1/3 of the planned catering space for the new airport building will be combined in a 1,800 m² food court on the gallery above the market square.
