The Forestport Tower was a 371 meter high transmission mast for long and long wave waves in Forestport , New York.
The Forestport Tower was completed in 1950 and at the time of its completion it was the second tallest structure on earth. He played a major role in the development of the LORAN-C and OMEGA radio navigation systems .
Since these radio navigation systems played a major role in the Cold War , the Forestport Tower was considered a symbol of the Cold War. With the advent of GPS satellite navigation , the OMEGA system was switched off and the Forestport Tower, which had become dispensable, was demolished on April 21, 1998.
