The Formosan Association for Public Affairs (English Formosan Association for Public Affairs, FAPA ) is a non-profit organization with the goal of global support for the sovereignty of Taiwan through active public relations and political communication . The name "Formosa" is borrowed from the Portuguese name "Ilha Formosa", which Portuguese sailors gave to the island of Taiwan when it was discovered in 1583 .

Three main clubs

FAPA USA

The first FAPA was founded in Los Angeles in 1982 by Taiwanese living in the USA . With 55 local chapters, it is the world's largest main association and strives to represent the goals and interests of Taiwanese in the world and to provide politicians, the media and the American population with information about Taiwan and the Taiwan conflict in particular . The current headquarters of FAPA USA is in Washington, DC

FAPA Young Professional Group

The FAPA Young Professional Group is a subsidiary of FAPA USA, whose members were recruited from the second generation of Taiwanese-Americans. Their goals are identical to those of the US Federation. In addition to a number of regional events, the YPG annually holds a national conference in Washington DC, during which participants have the opportunity to question congressmen about the relationship between the US and Taiwan.

FAPA Canada

FAPA Canada was originally founded as part of FAPA USA in 1984 in Ottawa , Toronto and Vancouver , but became independent in December 1993. It takes an active role in maintaining relations with the Canadian Parliament and promotes the political, economic and cultural exchange between Canada and Taiwan. In addition, he informs, like FAPA USA, politicians and the media about Taiwanese affairs.

FAPA Europe

FAPA Europe was founded in 2007 as an independent European branch with offices in Athens , Mainz and Freiburg im Breisgau . It supports Taiwan's independence and is methodologically similar to FAPA USA and FAPA Canada.

Members

FAPA Europe started on March 1st, 2007 with three founding members. Since then, the number of members has increased to 56 members through active recruitment and special use of online media such as StudiVZ or Yahoo Groups . The members' countries of origin are mostly Germany, Greece, France and the Netherlands.

The FAPA does not work independently from the government of the Republic of China , but consults with it in formal and informal meetings. Current measures of the FAPA include a. Letter campaigns to the respective members of parliament and press releases on the Taiwan conflict in the international area. Various articles have already been published in various US, Canadian and European (Germany, England, Greece) national print media. In addition to the publication of various articles by the various FAPAs, FAPA Europe initiated a UN campaign in which EU citizens could print out a prescribed letter and send it to the respective government.
