Fort-Liberté , Creole. Fòlibète , is the administrative capital of the Nord-Est department in Haiti . It is also the capital of an arrondissement of the same name.
The city, eight kilometers west of the border with the Dominican Republic in the south of a bay, has a small port. Besides fishing, the economic activity consists in the cultivation of sugar cane , mangoes and citrus fruits .
history
The settlement was founded in 1578 by Spaniards who called it Bayaha . The French later called it Fort-Dauphin . It was named Fort-Royal under the rule of Henri Christophe , when King Henry I ruled North Haiti. After his death in 1820, the place was renamed again, since then it has been called Fort-Liberté.

- The French statesman Vincent-Marie Viénot de Vaublanc was born in Fort Dauphin .
- In September 1892 José Martí visited Fort-Liberté on his way to the Cuban War of Independence .
