The Fort Sesfontein and Cemetery was a National Monument in Namibia . It is located near the small town of Sesfontein in the Kaokoveld .
In 1896 the fort was built by the German Schutztruppe . The area around Sesfontein ( six springs ) was chosen because of the good water supply for cattle and horses. It was mainly used as a checkpoint against rinderpest , poaching and arms smuggling.
In 1914 the fort was abandoned. In the following years, the fort and the German military cemetery fell into disrepair to the ground. In 1984 the fort and cemetery were declared a National Monument. This status was revoked on October 31, 1989. Five years later, private investors began restoring the fort on the basis of historical photos and expanding it into Fort Sesfontein Lodge , a small hotel with 46 beds, a restaurant and camping facilities.
