location

The fort of Ra's al-Hadd is not far from the easternmost point of Oman, which protrudes into the Indian Ocean and represents the entrance to the Gulf of Oman . The fort itself was built on a hill to monitor shipping traffic along the coast and also to control access to the canyons in the Hajar Mountains . The distance to Sur , the most important city in the region, is 35 kilometers.

history

The fort was built by local tribes in the second half of the 16th century, between 1560 and 1590. At that time, Oman had been partially conquered by the Portuguese . The Portuguese were later driven out of Oman by the Yaruba dynasty and the region became part of the Sultanate's heyday from the mid-17th century.

The fort has been renovated twice by the Omani government, including a full renovation in 1995.

investment

Ra's al-Hadd has a castle with a floor plan 16 meters long and 13 meters wide, with three meters thick foundation walls that were built from stone and mortar. The gate of the fort is 2.5 meters high and three meters wide. The facility has two towers that are connected by a toll. The larger of the two towers acts as the central structure of the castle with a height of 13 meters and a diameter of seven meters.

The fort has some rooms such as a waiting room, a room for majlis to settle disputes, and a prison for the temporary detention of people. In addition, there are facilities to defend against enemies and to monitor the environment. The fort's infrastructure also includes an ammunition depot and a well.
