Fotis-Fanourios (Fotis) Kouvelis ( Greek Φώτης-Φανούριος (Φώτης) Κουβέλης , born September 3, 1948 in Volos ) is a Greek lawyer and politician. He is the founder of the moderate left party Dimokratiki Aristera (Democratic Left).

Life

Kouvelis studied law and political science at the University of Athens . He practiced as a lawyer and was President of the Athens Bar Association.

He joined the Lambrakis youth and was a founding member of the Eurocommunist "KKE Esoterikou" ('Inlands-KKE'); he was a member of its central committee until the fall of the party. In 1987 he was involved in founding the successor party Elliniki Aristera (Greek Left) and was its general secretary from 1989 to 1992.

In 1989, Kouvelis was Minister of Justice in the government of Tzannis Tzannetakis for a few months .

In the parliamentary elections of November 1989 , he was on the list of the left electoral alliance Synaspismos for the first time as a member of the electoral district of Athens 2 in the Parliament elected and re-elected in the parliamentary elections 1990th Meanwhile converted to a party, Synaspismos failed in the parliamentary elections in 1993 because of the 3 percent hurdle , in the parliamentary elections in 1996 and 2000 , Kouvelis succeeded in re-election. In February 2008 he ran for the chairmanship of Synaspismos, but was defeated by Alexis Tsipras .

In June 2010, as the head of a reform wing, Kouvelis announced his exit from Synaspismos and left the SYRIZA parliamentary group. Shortly afterwards he founded a new party, the Dimokratiki Aristera (Democratic Left). On July 10, 2010, he was elected chairman at the party's first congress. In the parliamentary elections in 2009 , in May 2012 and June 2012 , he won another mandate. The party clearly failed in an electoral alliance with the green party Prasini in the January 2015 election due to the 3 percent hurdle . At the 4th party congress in June 2015, Kouvelis was no longer available for the office of party chairman. His successor was Thanasis Theocharopoulos .
